Ingredients
- 4 cups all purpose flour
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 tsp baking soda
- 2 tsp ground ginger
- 1 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp ground cloves
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup robust flavored dark molasses
- 1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening
- 1 large egg, beaten to blend
- 1/2 cup boiling water
- Additional sugar

Preparation
Step 1
Combine first 8 ingredients in large bowl. Add molasses, shortening and egg; beat to blend. Beat in boiling water. Chill 1 hour.
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Roll chilled dough by Tbspfuls into balls. Roll in additional sugar. Space balls 2" apart on ungreased baking sheets. Bake until cookies are puffed and cracked on top and centers still feel soft, about 12 min. Transfer to racks to cool.
