Preparation
Step 1
Dissolve yeast in warm water. Put milk/oleo in a saucepan and heat to lukewarm. Remove from heat and add to yeast and water. Add flour, salt and sugar; stir well. Cover and place in warm place to rise for 15 minutes. Turn onto thickly floured board (about 1/2 cup flour); knead until easy to roll. Roll out dough into a rectangular sheet on a lightly floured board. Brush with melted butter or oleo; sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon. Add a generous amount of chopped dates and nuts. Roll up like jellyroll and form into a ring on a greased baking sheet. Using large scissors, cut ring around edge at 1 1/2-inch intervals, leaving center of ring intact. Turn each slice to be flat on pan. Let rise for 15 minutes. Bake in 400 degree oven for about 30 minutes. Glaze and garnish in manner desired.
Makes 1 large or 2 small rings.
