Ingredients

  • 1/2 Cup Sifted unsweetened cocoa
  • 1 Cup boiling water
  • 2 1/4 Cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 Cup soft butter
  • 2 Cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk or sour milk.

Preparation

Step 1

In small bowl conbine cocoa with boiling water, mixing well. Let cool

Meanwhile, preheat oven to 350F. Grease well and flour two 8" layer or 13x9 baking pan.

Sift flour with baking soda, baking powder, and salt. set aside.

In large bowl of electric mixer, at high speed, beat butter, sugar, eggs, and vanilla until light and fluffy.

At low speed, blend in flour mixture (in fourths) with combined milk and cocoa mixture; starting and finishing with flour mixture. Beat just until smooth.

Pour batter in pans. Bake layers for 30 minutes or oblong for 35 minutes; until surface springs bakc when gently pressed with fingertip.

Cool in pans 10 minutes. Remove from pans and cool on wire racks.
