Ingredients
- Topping:
- 2 Tbsp. unsalted butter
- 1 cup bulgur (precooked cracked wheat, medium grind)
- 1 tsp. salt or more to taste
- 4 Tbsp. (1/2 stick) unsalted butter
- 2 Tbsp. light or dark brown sugar
- 2 medium bananas, peeled and halved lengthwise, then cut into 1- to 2-inch pieces
- 1 to 2 Tbsp. half and half, optional

Step 1
Warm the butter in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat. Add the bulgur and saute it briefly, until fragrant and a bit more deeply colored, about 5 minutes. Pour in 3 cups hot water and the salt and bring to a bare simmer. Cover and cook for about 10 minutes. Let stand for 10 minutes longer off the heat. Pour the mixture into a colander or large strainer, covering the top with a towel to help keep it warm while it drains, about 10 minutes. Prepare the topping, warming the butter and brown sugar in a small skillet over medium heat. When melted, add the bananas and stir to coat. Saute until the bananas are soft, about 3 minutes. Add half and half for a more pourable sauce. Spoon the cereal into bowls, divide the topping equally among them, and serve.
