Ingredients

  • 3 slices bread toasted
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 stick butter
  • 1/2 stick oleo
  • 1/3 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 cup raisins optional
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Step 1

Melt butter and oleo; add sugar. Combine milk and evaporated milk and heat; beat eggs slightly; add small amount milk/cream mixture to beaten eggs, then add the rest of the milk/cream. We do this to prevent milk from curdling. Add milk/cream and egg mixture to butter and sugar. Add salt and vanilla, and also raisins. Pour ingredients into baking dish, then cut the bread into little cubes & place on top of liquid. Place dish into pan of water (1 inch) and bake in 350 F oven for about 30 min. Insert knife, if comes out clean, custard is finished. If custard adheres, bake longer but keep testing every 5 minutes. Key to this recipe is in the baking!
