Ingredients
- 1/4 cup butter or oleo
- 1/4 cup flour
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. pepper
- 2 cups milk

Preparation
Step 1
In a medium saucepan, slowly melt butter just until melted and golden, not browned, stirring all the while.
Remove from the heat.
Add flour, salt, and pepper; stir until smooth.
Add milk, a small amount at a time.
Stir thoroughly after each addition.
Return to heat, bring to boiling, stirring constantly.
Reduce heat; simmer one minute.
CHEESE SAUCE:
Add 1/2 tsp. dry mustard and 2 cups grated sharp cheddar cheese to white sauce.
Stir over low heat until cheese is melted and sauce is hot.
