Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/4 cup light flavored molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 2 1/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

Step 1

1. In a large mixing bowl, beat shortening with an electric mixer on med-high speed for 30 seconds. Add the brown sugar, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon and cloves. Beat on med-high speed until combined. Beat in molasses and egg. Beat in as much of the flour as you can with the mixer. Stir in remaining flour.

2. Shape dough into 1" balls. Roll balls in the granulated sugar to coat. Place balls 2" apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.

3. Bake cookies in a 375 degree oven for 8-10 min or until the edges are set and the tops are slightly cracked. Cool cookies on the cookie sheet for 1 min. Transfer cookies to a wire rack; cool.
