- 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup low-fat buttermilk
- 1/3 cup packed dark-brown sugar
- 1 egg
- 4 teaspoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preparation
Step 1
Heat oven to 325 degrees. Coat a 6-indentation doughnut pan with nonstick cooking spray.
In large bowl, whisk flour, baking soda & salt. In a small bowl, whisk buttermilk, sugar, egg, melted butter & vanilla until smooth. Add milk mixture to flour mixture; whisk until smooth.
Spoon batter into pastry bag or large resealable bag. Cut corner and squeeze batter into pan. Each indent should be about 2/3 full. Smooth tops. Bake for 13 minutes until doughnuts spring back when lightly pressed. Cool in pan on rack for 3 minutes then turn out onto rack to cool completely.
For powdered doughnuts: Toss doughnuts in 1/4 cup confectioners' sugar.
For white-frosted doughnuts: Combine 1 cup confectioners' sugar & 1 tablespoon milk until smooth. Dip doughnuts into mixture and allow extra frosting to drip back into bow. Transfer to rack. Top with sprinkles, coconut, or mini chocolate chips if desired.
For chocolate-frosted doughnuts: Combine 1 cup confectioners' sugar & 2 tablespoons milk & 1 tablespoon cocoa powder until smooth. Dip doughnuts into mixture and allow extra frosting to drip back into bow. Transfer to rack. Top with sprinkles, coconut, or mini chocolate chips if desired.
For drizzle: Mix white or chocolate frosting as described above. Place in pastry bag or small plastic bag and drizzle over doughnuts.
For Cinnamon-Sugar doughnuts: Toss warn doughnuts in cinnamon-sugar mixture to coat them.
