Ingredients

  • cooking spray for pans
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 3/4 tsp baking powder
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350. Spray 2 8 inch round cake pans, and dust with cocoa. Whisk together cocoa, flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder and salt into the bowl of a mixer. Beat on low speed until just combined. Raise speed to medium, add eggs, buttermilk, water, oil and vanilla. Beat until smooth, 3 minutes.
Divide batter between pans. Bake until set, 35 minutes. Let cool 15 minutes. Turn out from pans, transfer, faceup to wire racks and let cool completely.
Spread 2 cups chocolate frosting onto top of 1 cooled layer. Top with other layer, frost top and sides with rest of frosting.
