Preparation

Step 1

Dissolve yeast in water. Pour milk over shortening, honey and salt; cool to lukewarm. Stir in 2 cups flour. Add dissolved yeast and oats; mix well. Stir in enough additional flour to make soft dough. Turn out onto lightly floured surface; knead 8-10 minutes or until smooth and elastic. Shape to form ball. Place in greased large bowl, turning once to coat surface of dough. Cover, let rise in warm place about 1 hour or until double in size. Punch dough down. Cover; let rest 10 minutes. Divide dough in half; roll out each half to form 15x9 inch rectangle. Roll up starting with narrow end; press together ends and seam to seal. Place in 2 greased 9x5 inch loaf pans. Brush lightly with melted butter, if desired. Cover; let rise about 45 minutes or until nearly double in size. Bake in preheated oven (375 F) about 45 minutes. Remove from pans; cool on wire rack.
