Ingredients
- 1/4 cup shortening
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 cup molasses
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 3/4 cups boiling water
- 1 large egg, lightly beaten

Preparation
Step 1
In a stand mixer, cream together the shortening and sugar.
In a small bowl, beat 1/2 teaspoon baking soda into the molasses until fluffy and light; add molasses mixture to the sugar mixture.
Sift together the flour baking powder, spices, and salt.
Mix the remaining 1/4 teaspoon baking soda into the boiling water.
Alternating between water mixture and dry mixture, gradually stir each to the molasses mixture. Stir until well mixed, then stir in egg.
