Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter softened, (1 stick)
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 4 eggs
  • 3 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cups black walnuts, ground
  • Frosting
  • 2 8 oz pkg cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup butter, softened (2 sticks)
  • 8 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tbs vanilla

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350°. Grease three 9 inch round cake pans; set aside. Cake: Beat sugar, butter and shortening until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking soda and salt. Add to butter mixture alternately with buttermilk, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla and ground walnuts.
Divide batter among the 3 pans. Bake 25 minutes. Cool in pans completely.
Cream Cheese Frosting: In a large bowl beat cream cheese until creamy and smooth. Beat in butter slowly. Add powdered sugar and vanilla. Beat until smooth.
Assemble - frost cake.
