Ingredients

  • Nut Mixture:
  • 1/2 pound of very soft oleo
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1/2 cake of household yeast
  • 1 pound Walnuts
  • 3 egg whites
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar

Preparation

Step 1

Crumble yeast in a small bowl.
Add 1/2 teaspoon sugar and 2 tablespoon lukewarm milk.
Set aside to rise.

In a large bowl combine the softened oleo, egg yolks, salt, milk and flour.
Mix well.
Add raised yeast mixture and mix well.
The dough will be very sticky but DO NOT add any more flour.
Pat the dough down and sprinkle the top lightly with a little flour.
Cover and put in refrigerator for at least 6 hours or over night.
Turn dough out on lightly floured surface and shape it into a jelly roll.
Cut the dough in 4 equal parts.
Roll it out thin.

Nut Mixture:

Beat egg whites until frothy.
Add sugar and beat well.
Fold in the nuts.
If too thick, add some milk to make it thinner.

spread the nut mixture onto the dough and roll up.
Fill too full and dough will split when rolled up.
Set aside to rise for at least 2 hours.
Brush the top of the nut rolls with egg just before you put them in the oven.
Bake at 375 degrees for 30 - 35 hours.
Allow the rolls to cool completely.
