Ingredients

  • For Filling:
  • 9 ounces ground lamb or beef
  • 1 garlic clove, crushed
  • 2 large tomatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 hot pepper, minced
  • 1-2 tsp curry powder
  • 1 red onion, minced
  • 1 beaten egg, for glazing
  • dash of salt and pepper
  • For Pastry:
  • 3 cups AP Flour
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1/4 cup butter

Step 1

Saute onion and garlic in oil for 10 minutes in a large skillet. Stir in the beef or lamb until evenly browned. Add tomatoes, hot pepper, curry and seasoning. Simmer with an additional 1/4 cup of water for about 15-20 minutes, until liquid has absorbed. Set aside and allow to cool.

For pastry, sift together dry ingredients. Roll in butter until there is a crumbly consistency. Pour in 3 Tbsp water and make a firm dough. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour. Preheat oven to 400. Portion the dough into 8 pieces. Roll out each piece into a 7 inch circle. Drop a spoonful of meat filling onto half of the pastry. Dab water on edge of pastry, fold over filling and press to seal. Arrange on a baking sheet. Brush tops with egg glaze. Bake until golden, about 30 minutes.
