  • 1 pkg active dry yeast
  • 2 T warm water
  • 5 c flour
  • 1/2 c sugar
  • 1 T baking powder
  • 2 t salt
  • 1 t baking soda
  • 1 c shortening
  • 2 c buttermilk
  • 1/4 c butter, melted

Preparation

Step 1

1. Stir yeast into warm water to soften. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and soda. Using pastry blender or two knives, cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in softened yeast and buttermilk.
2. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Pat or lightly roll dough to 1/2-inch thickness. Cut dough with 2 1/2-inch round or square biscuit cutter, dipping cutter into flour between cuts.
3. Place biscuits 1 inch apart on ungreased baking sheets. Brush tops with melted butter. Bake in a 400 degree oven for 12 to 14 minutes or until golden. Remove to wire racks. Serve warm.
