Ingredients

  • garnishes by choice :
  • 2 cups dried black beans
  • 1 large minced yellow onion
  • 4 cloves minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 3-4 Tablespoons chili powder, to taste
  • 1-2 teaspoons cumin
  • 1-2 smoked ham hock
  • 1 can Bock beer
  • shredded red cabbage or lettuce
  • sour cream or shredded cheese
  • chopped chives and-or chive blossoms
  • lime wedges

Preparation

Step 1

Soak the beans overnight in water to cover. Discard the water, rinse the beans, and add fresh water to cover.
Bring to a boil, then reduce to low. Saute the onion and garlic, and add to beans. Stir in the oregano, chili powder, and cumin. Add the ham hocks. Pour in the beer, and cover the pot. Simmer 2 hours. Garnish as desired.
