Ingredients
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 4 large white onions
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 Tbsp flour
- 3 cans condensed beef broth (10.5 oz ea)
- 1 broth can of water
- 1/4 cup dry red wine
- 1/3 cup garlic-flavored croutons
- 4 slices Swiss cheese

Step 1
Heat broiler. Melt ¼ cup unsalted butter in a 5-quart saucepan over medium-high heat.
Add 4 large white onions, halved and thinly sliced; stir to coat with butter. Cover; cook 8 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Add 1 tsp sugar; cover uncovered, stirring onions until slightly golden, about 6 minutes.
Add 1 tablespoon flour; cook 1 minute longer.
Stir in 3 cans condensed beef broth (10.5 oz each), 1 broth can of water, and ¼ cup dry red wine. Cover and simmer for 5 minutes.
Place four 2 –cup ovenproof bowls on baking sheet. Put 1/3 cup garlic-flavored croutons in each. Evenly divide soup among bowls, about 1 ¾ cups apiece. Top each with a slice of Swiss cheese.
Broil 3 minutes or until cheese is melted.
