Ingredients

  • 10 C water
  • 1 LB dry yellow split peas, rinsed & drained (abt 2 C)
  • 1/2 C regular barley
  • 2 TBL instant chicken bouillon granules
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 stalks celery, finely chopped
  • 2 med carrots, finely chopped (1 C)
  • 1 med. onion, finely chopped (1/2 C)
  • 5 oz cooked ham, chopped (1 C)
  • 1/2 tsp grd. black pepper
  • salt to taste

Preparation

Step 1

in 4-5 qt dutch oven or pot bring water, split peas, barley, bouillon granules & bay leaf to boiling
reduce heat
simmer covered for 30 min
stir in celery, carrots & onion
return to boiling
reduce heat
simmer, covered for 30 min. more or until vegies, peas & barley are tender

stir in ham & 1/2 tsp pepper
cook 5 min more or until ham is heated through
remove & discard bay leaf
season to taste w/ salt & additional pepper
