Ingredients

  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 4 cups water
  • 2 cups dry split peas
  • 1 meaty ham bone
  • Pinch crushed dried marjoram
  • 3 pinches garlic
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 2 cups chopped carrots
  • 1 cup chopped celery
  • 3 cups chopped onion
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Preparation

Step 1

In a large saucepan combine broth, water, split peas, ham bone, marjoram, garlic, bay leaves and some black pepper. Bring to a boil then reduce heat. Cover and simmer for 1.5 hours, stirring occasionally.

Remove ham bone and bay leaves, then add chunks of ham for flavour and return to heat. Simmer 5 minutes and remove from heat.
