Preparation

Step 1

Read complete instructions before starting! Assemble all supplies. Lay out decorative materials to determine theme, color and quantity to use. Set aside an item or two to embellish the outside of the jar.

Assembling Oil Light Lid: Mark the center point of the lid by measuring with the square and marking the location with the awl. Using the paper punch, punch a hole in the center of the lid to hold the glass wick holder. If the glass wick holder is too large for the hole, increase the size of the opening using tin snips. When the glass wick holder is put into the hole, the edge of the holder will rest on the lid. About ¼” from the center hole, punch a small hole in the lid with the tip of the awl. This will serve as a vent. Thread fiberglass wick through the wick holder and set it into the punched lid.

Assembling Oil Light Jar Base: Fill the jar with selected decorative accents to within ½” of the rim of the jar. Pour paraffin oil into the jar, bringing oil level to ¼” from the rim of the jar. Important: Use only paraffin oil. Center the lid fitted with the glass wick holder onto the jar with the red sealing compound resting on the jar rim. Be sure the end of the wick that is inside the jar is immersed in the oil. Screw the band securely on the jar to hold the lid in place.

Finishing touches: Tie raffia into a bow around the neck of the jar. Trim ends of raffia as needed. Add a colorful accent by gluing a few of the decorative items, which were set aside, to the center of the bow. The ties of the raffia can be decorated with cinnamon stars or whole anise for an aromatic accent.
