Ingredients

  • 1 lb Beef Stew meat or top of round roast
  • 1 Tbs salt
  • 1/2 loaf of stale white bread, unsliced
  • 1 lb fresh Kale or Cabbage
  • 3 or 4 small whole potatoes
  • 1 -inch piece stick of cinnamon
  • 4 or 5 whole allspice
  • 1 small onion
  • 1 medium clove of garlic
  • 3 Tbs ketchup
  • 3 or 4 sprigs of fresh mint

Step 1

Place meat in a large pot in top of stove. Add enough water to just cover the meat. Add spices, cinnamon, onion, garlic and salt. Cook over medium heat until meat is tender. Add the greens and potatoes and more water if needed. Tear the bread into chunks and cover with ketchup and top with mint. Set aside until meat has finished cooking, then pour some of the liquid over the bread and allow to be absorbed. Slice meat. Serve stew (Sopa) meat and vegetables separately.
