Ingredients

  • 1 pound taro root, cut in 1/2-inch cubes
  • 1/2 pound Kao Fu, see directions
  • SEASONING
  • 2 pieces fermented bean curd (red)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon chnese five spice
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 Tablespoon oil

Preparation

Step 1

Heat oil in wok on medium heat. Saute all the seasonings. Add taro root and stir. Add Kao Fu and stir. Add 2 cups of water and cook for 5 minutes.

Alternate 1 piece of taro root and 1 piece of Kao Fu in a baking pan. Pour seasoning over all and steam for 45 minutes on high heat until taro root becomes. soft. Invert the pan onto a plate. Serve.

How to Make Kao Fu:

Mix 3 cups gluten flour with 1 tbsp. baking powder. Add 3 cups water, stirring quickly. Lightly mix, don't knead.

Flatten to 3/4' thick on 2 cookie sheets lined with parchment paper. Bake at 375F for 45 - 50 minutes.

Use 2 cookie sheets so bottom doesn't burn.
