Ingredients
- 1 package or tablespoon active dry yeast
- 3/4 cup milk, scalded
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 2 tablespoons shortening
- 1 egg, slightly beaten
- 2 teaspoons celery seed
- 1 teaspoon sage
- 1/2 tablespoon ground nutmeg
- 3 cups all-purpose flour (3 to 3 1/2 cups)

Step 1
Soften yeast in 1/4 cup warm water (110 degrees). Combine hot milk, sugar, 1 1/2 teaspoon salt, and shortening; cool to lukewarm. Add yeast; mix well. Add egg, celery seed, sage, nutmeg, and 2 cups of the flour; beat until smooth. Add enough of remaining flour to make a moderately soft dough. Knead on lightly floured surface (about 8 minues).
Place in lightly greased bowl, turning once to grease surface. Cover; let rise til double (about 1 1/2 hours).
Punch down; cover and let rest 10 minutes. Shape in road loaf; place in greased 9 inch pie plate. Cover; let rise til double (46-60 minutes). Bake at 400 degrees for 35 minutes or til done. Makes one loaf.
