Preparation
Step 1
Making Limoncello
Limoncello can be made at home and stored in the freezer. Make it by removing the rind of 17 large lemons and placing the lemon peel in a 4-quart jar with a rubber-seal lid. Add two 750-millileter bottles grain alcohol, completely covering the peel. Store the mixture in a cool, dark place and shake once a day. After 13 days, boil 5 ½ cups water and add 6 cups sugar. Remove from heat and store until dissolved. Let cool. Strain lemon peel mixture into sugar mixture, discarding peel and then stir. Store in jar for three weeks, shaking twice a day. After three weeks, transfer to smaller bottles and store in freezer.
Limoncello can be kept in the refrigerator or freezer and served straight up or on the rocks. It also can be used in mixed drinks such as martinis and bellinis or mixed with iced tea.
