Hints from Heloise - Canned food "use by" date

Dear Heloise: How long is canned food good to use after the “use by” date printed on the can? I just threw out more than 20 cans and now wonder if it was necessary.

It may not have been necessary! If the cans are in good condition and have been stored properly (in a cool, dry, dark place), then the food should be safe to eat after the date passes. However, taste and texture of foods can change over time. Make sure the cans do not have any bulging, leakage or dents before eating the contents.
