Ingredients

  • 1 carton Campbell’s® Sweet Onion Soup
  • 1 can Campbell’s® Condensed Beef Consomme
  • 2 yellow onions, sliced and cut
  • 2 T butter
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 small French baguette, sliced crosswise into 1/2-inch pieces
  • Gruyere cheese, grated {or you can substitute slices of Provolone cheese}

Step 1

Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add onions and sprinkle with sugar. Cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally until caramelized and brown.

Combine the Sweet Onion Soup and Beef Consomme, along with 1 1/4 cups of water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low. Add the caramelized onions and simmer while you prepare the bread.

Lightly toast bread under a broiler; set aside. Transfer hot soup into ovenproof bowls and place on a baking pan. Place 1 or 2 slices of toasted bread over each bowl of soup. Sprinkle grated cheese on top of each slice of bread. Place the baking pan under the broiler until cheese melts and starts to become crusty brown around the edges.
