Preparation
Step 1
Directions
Start by preheating the oven to 350 degrees.
Lightly butter 9 inch square pan and dust with flour, knocking out excess.
Melt 1 tbs. butter in medium sized skillet.
Add apple slices and saute over medium to high heat for 2 minutes, stirring often, until apples are tender-firm.
Move slices to plate and let them cool.
Put flour, baking powder, and salt into medium bowl, mix and set aside.
With electric mixer, combine remaining butter and cream cheese in a large bowl until creamed.
Slowly add in sugar, 1/2 cup at a time.
Add in eggs 1 at a time, making sure to beat well after each addition.
Add flour, a third at a time, making sure to blend well after each addition.
Add in vanilla extract and lemon zest.
Pour the batter into baking pan and smooth it with a spoon.
Now make the topping by combining the flour, sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a large bowl.
Add the butter and rub into the dry ingredients until you have uniform butter crumbs.
Sprinkle half of the crumbs over the cake batter, then layer with the apple slices. Top the cake with the remaining crumbs.
Bake on the center rack for 50-60 minutes.
When finished, the cake will pull away from the sides and the top will be golden brown.
Let the cake cool down completely on the stove or a rack.
Serve.
