Ingredients
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup molasses
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp. ground allspice
- 1 tsp. ground ginger
- 1 cup hot water
- Whipped cream
- Ground cinnamon (optional)

Preparation
Step 1
Beat shortening at medium speed of an electric mixer until light and fluffy; gradually add sugar, beating well. Add eggs and molasses, mixing well.
Combine flour and next 4 ingredients; add to shortening mixture alternately with water, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Mix after each addition. Pour batter into a greased and floured 8-inch square pan.
Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center of cake comes out clean. Serve cake dolloped with whipped cream and sprinkle with ground cinnamon, if desired.
