Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 425°.

Rub half of 1 clove garlic all over inside of 3-quart shallow glass or ceramic baking dish; discard garlic. Rub 1/2 tbsp butter all over dish; cut remaining butter into small pieces and reserve.

Cut potatoes into 1/8 inch thick slices.

In a 12 inch skillet, combine potatoes, milk and remaining garlic.

Heat to boiling on medium, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer 3 minutes. Stir in nutmeg, 1 tsp salt, and 1/2 tsp pepper. Remove garlic and discard. Carefully transfer potato mixture to prepared baking dish, spreading evenly. Top with reserved butter pieces.

Bake gratin 30 minutes or until golden brown with darker brown spots and potatoes are tender when pierced with tip of knife. Cool on wire rack 10 minutes before serving.
