Ingredients

  • 3 shredded wheat biscuits
  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup molasses
  • 3 tablespoons shortening
  • 1 package dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 5 1/2 cups King Arthur flour

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

Mix yeast with warm water.

Pour boiling water over crumbled shredded wheat biscuits. Add sugar, molasses and shortening. Allow to cool some. Stir a little to dissolve shortening.

when shredded wheat mixture is just warm, add yeast mixture. Mix in the flour until "right consistency" (not too sticky). You may have to add a little flour.

Place dough in an large oiled bowl. Cover with damp cloth and allow to rise for an hour or until doubled in size.

Punch down dough and knead for 5 minutes.

Divide dough in half and place each half in a greased and floured 9 X 5 loaf pan. Cover with towels and allow to rise until the dough is about 1 inch over the top edge of the pan.

Bake at 375 degrees for 40-45 minutes.

Cool over a wire rack. Wait until completely cooled before cutting.
