Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1 tsp cocoa
  • 4 bottles (1/2 oz) red food coloring
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • Frosting
  • 1 TBSP flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Preparation

Step 1

Cream together shortening, sugar, and eggs. Once well creamed add flour, vanilla and vinegar.

Make a paste of cocoa and red food coloring. Then add paste, milk and baking soda to creamed mixture.

Put into 9 x 9 greased pan, bake in 350 degree oven for 45 mins.

For Frosting:

Cook flour and milk in small saucepan until thick. Stirring all the time to keep smooth. Remove from stove and let cool.

Cream together sugar, butter and vanilla. Pour thickened milk mixture into creamed mixture and beat for about 10 mins or until fluffy and looks like whipped cream.
