Preparation

Step 1

The figure has about 10 points of articulation: shoulders, elbows, wrists, head, waist and wings. Look at that wingspan! I am very happy they included wings that could be posed with the figure, but they are kind of a pain. They come detached in the box with pegs you need to insert into the back of the figure. This looks like it should be easy to do, but you need to use a lot of force to get them to lock in place. I thought I was going to break the figure but luckily did not. Xibalba is not the most colorful figure, but the blues and purples against the black make the figure pop. His head piece and shoulder pads have dangling skulls and his mustache and beard are very ornate. What I wish this figure had was all the detailed Day of the Dead designs painted on his face. That really is an important part of the movie’s aesthetics and is missed in the figure. Overall I really like the figure. It is a great representation of the animated character. If you loved him in the movie, or just like his design, you should pick this guy up. He makes a great display piece.

To celebrate the release of the movie, I also made some Mexican Cinnamon Sugar Heart Cookies. These crispy cookies are sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar making them taste like churros. The ground almonds and the addition of cinnamon tea into the batter insure this cookie is well flavored throughout. To promote the movie, McDonalds came out with The Book of Life Trick or Treat pails for their Happy Meals. I couldn’t resist and had to purchase one last October. I used the pail to store these yummy cookies in! Enjoy them with a mug of hot cinnamon tea or Mexican hot chocolate.

2 Tsp. Cinnamon Tea (Boil 1 cinnamon stick in 1 cup water)

In large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, ground almonds, and salt. Mix by hand using a spatula and add the butter until evenly mixed.

Add vanilla and cooled tea. Knead until it forms a ball. Divide into 4 equally sized balls.

Place onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

For the topping add sugar and cinnamon in a bowl and mix until evenly combined.

Roll slightly cooled cookie in the sugar and cinnamon mixture, place on cooling rack to cool completely.

Thanks! These did not last long at all. I will have to make some for Valentine’s Day!
