Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 tsp. finely grated orange zest
  • 1 tsp. grand marnier
  • 2 cups unbleached, all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 6 oz. semisweet chocolate, coarsely chopped

Step 1

1. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a 9inch square pan.

2. For the brownie base: combine the butter and sugars in a double boiler set over simmering water. Stir often, over low heat, until butter is melted and mixture is smooth.

3. Remove top of double boiler from heat, and carefully wipe bottom (so none of the moisture steams up into the mixture). Whisk in egg, zest, and grand marnier until well combined.

4. Gently stir in flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir in chocoalte. Spread into prepared pan. Bake for 25 minutes or until a cake tester or toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs attached. Cool pan completely on a wire rack. Cut into squares. Makes 2 dozen.
