Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup soft shortening
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups dark molasses
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 6 cups flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. allspice
  • 1 tsp. ginger
  • 1 tsp. cloves
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 2 tsp. baking soda dissolved in 3 Tbs. cold water

Step 1

Mix togetber the shortening, brown sugar and molasses. Stir in the 1/2 cup of cold water. Sift together the remaining ingredients. Stir in the baking soda and water mixture. Chill dough. Roll out very thick about 1/2 in. Cut with 2 1/2 in. round cutter. Place far apart on lightly greased baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees until when touched lightly with finger, no imprint remainss, 15/18 min.
