Preparation

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Spray a large baking sheet with nonstick spray.

Combine the cheddar, Parmesan, chili powder and salt in a medium bowl.
Unfold the pastry sheet onto a lightly floured surface. With a floured rolling pin, roll the sheet into a 14 x 10-inch rectangle.

Cut the sheet lengthwise in half. Brush each half with the beaten egg.
Sprinkle the cheese mixture evenly over half of the pastry. Lightly press the mixture into the sheet with the rolling pin.

Place the remaining half, egg-side down, over the filling. Press the top of the pastry lightly with the rolling pin to seal.

Cut the pastry with a floured knife or pizza cutter crosswise into 28 (1/2-inch-wide) strips.

Twist the strips, 3 or 4 times, and place on the baking sheet, pressing down on the ends to keep the strips in place.

Bake until puffed and golden, 12-15 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. Serve warm or at room temperature.
