Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 T milk
  • 1 t vanilla
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/4 cups flour
  • 1 t cream of tartar
  • 1/2 t baking soda
  • 1/4 t salt
  • powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cherry or red currant jelly

Preparation

Step 1

In large bowl, beat sugar and butter until light and fluffy. Add milk, vanilla and egg; blend well. Stir in flour, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt; mix well. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 3 hours or until firm.
Heat oven to 425.
Using stockinet-covered rolling pin and well-floured pastry cloth, roll dough 1/3 at a time to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut with floured 3-inch star cookie cutter and use 1-inch circle to cut the center out of half of the stars. Place stars 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 3-5 minutes or until edges are lightly golden. Let cool 1 minute then remove from cookie sheet and cool completely.
To assemble cookies, sprinkle tops with powdered sugar. Spread 1/2 teaspoon of jelly on bottoms and place tops on.
