Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spread mashed potatoes evenly on bottom of casserole dish. Layer sour cream evenly over top. (Each time you add a layer, sprinkle on a little House seasoning.) Saute onion and bell pepper in butter; evenly layer over top of sour cream. Next, layer with 1/2 cup Cheddar cheese. Slice potatoes and layer over cheese until top is completely covered with potatoes. Finally top with remaining 1 cup cheese. Bake for 25-30 minutes. Remove from oven and crumble bacon over top.
Question, preparing this for Christmas dinner. Can I make it 24 hours before and refrigerate until baking?
Can't wait to taste this potatoe casserole when I saw paula make it on the show was so excited to try it. Making it for dinner tonight my husband is even excited. Love the show.
I found this recipe several years ago and have used it for special meals when guests come over ever since. You can make it ahead of time and pop it in the oven at whatever temperature works with the rest of your meal. You can also adjust the proportions to the number of guests. (Leftovers are great!) There are so many comments about the butter. I use some of the butter to pour over the casserole, but you can adjust it to your taste. If you love mashed potatoes, you'll love this. If you love baked potatoes, you'll love this. You just can't miss with this recipe!!! If I remember correctly, Paula came up with this recipe to use leftover potatoes. Wow, what a transformation!
SO GOOD! My whole family loves it. The only thing I do different is I add hamburger to it to make it the main dish. Thanks Paula!
I just "LOVE" Paula and her family. I have watched her since she was working with Gordon going from house to house with her wagon filled of spices and other food items.
Everyone says that they' are her biggest find but "I beg to differ" I have been her #1 fan from the very beginning. Paulas is wonderful and I admire how she has come form so much diversity and she kept pushing on with hard work and dedication no matter how hard it was....and believe me it was hard for her and her family,
Additionally, I have watched every program that she has created/been on and add to that "road tasted" by her sons.
