Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp cocoa
  • 2 oz red food coloring
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 c buttermilk
  • 1 1/2 tsp vinegar
  • 2 1/2 cups sifted cake flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda

Preparation

Step 1

Cream shortening and sugar, add eggs one at a time. Make paste with cocoa and food coloring. Add to creamed mixture. Mix salt and vanilla with buttermilk. Add alternately with flour to creamed mixture. Mix soda and vinegar (do not beat) and fold into mixture. Bake in two 8 or 9 inch greased pans for 30 minutes at 350 degrees.
