Preparation

Step 1

1. Dissolve two packages of dry yeast in ¼ warm water; add 1 teaspoon sugar. Set aside. Combine 1 cup of water, ½ cup sugar, 1 tablespoon salt, and 4 tablespoons of shortening. Heat until dissolved. Add 1 cup cold water. Let stand until mixture is lukewarm.

2. Combine 1 cup of water, ½ cup sugar, 1 tablespoon salt, and 4
tablespoons of shortening. Heat until dissolved. Add 1 cup cold water. Let stand until mixture is lukewarm. To the sugar/water mixture, add the 2 beaten eggs and the yeast mixture. Add 4 cups of flour; beat well.

3. Add remaining flour, 1 cup at a time. Mix until smooth, using hands
when necessary. (May not need all 8 cups of flour, but if dough is too sticky, add a little more flour.) Smooth and shape into mound. Moisten top with a few drops of cold water. Cover lightly. Let dough rise until double. Divide dough in half. Roll out one half on floured board. Cut into strips ¼" thick. Fry in deep hot fat (Crisco).
