Ingredients
- FOR SURPRISES:
- 1 cup soft shortening (part butter)
- 1/2 cup swifted confectioners' sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/2 teaspoon almond flavoring
- 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon red or green food coloring
- 2 1/4 cups sifted flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 9 candiedcherries, quartered
- 1/4 cup broken nuts
- 1/4 cup chocolate pieces

Step 1
Mix wellshortening, sugar,flavorings, foodcoloring. Blend inflour and salt. If dough seems too dry, add a few drops of cream. Chiull 1 hour.
Heat oven to 400 degrees. In palm of hand, pat 1 level tablespoon dough into oblong about 3 x 1 1/2". Lenghtwise down cenbter, place surprises - 2 chocolate pieces,1 quarter of cherry, 2 pieces of nuts. Mold dough around surprises into roll 3" long. Place on ungreased baking sheet, turning end of roll for foot of stocking. Bake 10-12 minutes.
Cool. Frost tops and toes with confectioners' sugar icing.
