Ingredients

  • 1/2

    cup shortening

  • 1/2

    cup butter

  • 4

    T. cocoa

  • 1

    cup water

  • 2

    cups sugar

  • 2

    cups flour

  • 1/2

    cup buttermilk

  • 2

    eggs beaten

  • 1

    tp baking soda

  • 1

    tp vanilla

  • Frosting:

  • 1/4

    cups butter

  • 2

    T. cocoa

  • 3

    T. milk

  • 2

    cups powdered sugar

  • 1

    tp vanilla

  • 1

    cup chopped nuts

Directions

Sift together flour & sugar. In a sauce pan bring first 4 ingredients to a boil. Pour over flour mixture while still hot; add buttermilk, eggs, baking soda and vanilla. Bake at 400˚F for 20 minutes. Use a 16 x 11 x 1 pan. While baking make frosting. Bring first 3 ingredients to a boil. Add enough powdered sugar to spread easily. Add vanilla & nuts if desired. Spread while both are warm.
