Preparation
Step 1
1. The night before you are planning on serving the French Toast, arrange the slices of bread in a heavily buttered square or round baking pan.
2. Whisk together the eggnog, eggs, sugar and grated peel. Pour it evenly over the bread slices and push the bread down into the custard. Cover the pan and refrigerate it overnight.
3. The next morning, remove the pan from the refrigerator, and let it rest at room temperature while you preheat the oven to 350°F. Uncover the pan, and bake for about 45 minutes, until the top is golden and the toast is set. Remove from the oven, allow it rest for 10 minutes. Cut into squares to serve and generously dust it with confectioner's sugar.
4. Optional: Serve with whipped butter and maple syrup along with your choice of breakfast meats.
