Ingredients

  • To make your own:
  • 3 cups self rising flour
  • (1 c flour - 1-1/2 tsp baking powder - 1/4 tsp salt)
  • 6 T cold shortening or butter
  • 1 cup cold milk or buttermilk

Preparation

Step 1

Work shortening into flour until it is unevenly crumbly with some pea-sized lumps scattered throughout. Add milk and stir until the mixture holds together and leaves the side of the bowl, add more milk if necessary. Scoop the dough onto a heavily floured surface and fold over several times. Use more flour if needed to make a soft dough. Roll out to about 1/2 thick. Cut with a biscuit cutter. Place on ungreased baking sheet, leaving about 1" between biscuits, if soft sides are wanted arrange them so they are barely touching. Bake 425 degrees for 10-14 minutes.
