Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/8 cup sugar
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 cup buttermilk

Preparation

Step 1

Dissolve the yeast in warm water and set aside.
Place all the dry ingredients in a bowl and mix.
The shortening should be cut in, similar to when making pie crust. Stir in the buttermilk and the yeast mixture. Mix well and refrigerate in a covered bowl. This dough can be made up to 3 days in advance and stored in the refrigerato.
Take the dough out when ready to make the biscuits. Knead it Lightly on a floured counter. Roll out the dough gently and cut into shape. Use a small juice glass to cut out just the right size biscuit. Place the biscuits in a greased pan and allow to rise slightly. Bake in a 400 degree oven for 12-15 minutes.
