- 1 AND 1/2 CUPS BOILING WATER
- 1 AND 1/2 CUPS CHOPPED DATES
- 1 TEASPOON BAKING SODA 1/4 CUP BUTTER
- SET ASIDE AND LET SOFTEN 15 MINUTES OR SO
- COMBINE: THEN ADD TO SOFTENED DATES
- 1 CUP SUGAR
- 1 AND 1/2 CUP FLOUR
- 1 TEASPOON BAKING POWDER
- 1 TEASPOON SALT
- 1 BEATEN EGG
- 1 TEASPOON VANILLA
- GREASE BOTTOM OF RECTANGLE BAKING DISH
- BAKE AT 350 DEGREES FOR 30 TO 35 MINUTES
- SIMMER IN SAUCE-PAN UNTIL THICK AND DARK STIR OCCASIONALLY ABOUT 20 MINUTES OR SO:
- 1 CUP CHOPPED DATES
- 3/4 CUP COLD WATER
- 1 TABLESPOON BUTTER
- COOL CAKE AND TOPPING THEN SPREAD TOPPING ON CAKE AND SPRINKLE WITH CHOPPED NUTS
- SERVE COOLED WITH COOL WHIP OR REAL WHIPPED CREAM
