  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 6 Tablespoons oil
  • 1 Tablespoon cider vinegar or distilled white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup cold water

Preheat oven to 350. Grease and flour an 8 inch square baking pan, tapping out the excess flour.

Sift the flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, and salt directly into the pan. Stir these ingredients with a fork to blend them. Use the back of a spoon to make three evenly spaced wells in the dry ingredient mixture. Pour the oil into the first hold, the vinegar into the second, and the vanilla into the third. Pour the water carefully and as evenly as possible over the whole thing. Use the fork the mix everything together vigorously and thoroughly. Get the fork into all the corners. There are no egg whites or anything to deflate in this batter, so you can stir long and hard if you need to.

Bake the cake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until it just begins to shrink from the sides of the pan. Cool thoroughly in the pan.
