Ingredients

  • For the frosting:
  • 2 1/4 c flour
  • 1/2 teas salt
  • 2 T unsweetened cocoa
  • 3/4 c butter, softened
  • 1 c powdered sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teas vanilla
  • 1/2 teas red food coloring
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 2 T butter
  • 4 T powdered sugar
  • 1/4 teas vanilla

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 325 and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Whisk together the flour, salt and cocoa in a medium bowl. In a large bowl beat the butter and powdered sugar together until light and fluffy. Add in the egg and vanilla and beat until combined. Add the food coloring and mix until the color is even and there are no streaks that remain. Working in batches add the flour mixture and stir until incorporated. Roll dough into 1 inch balls and place on prepared cookie sheet. Make an indent into each ball in the middle using the end of a wooden spoon. Bake for 12 minutes and let cool.

To make the frosting:
Beat all the ingredients together until smooth and spreadable. Fill each cookie indent with frosting using a spoon or pastry bag.
