Ingredients
- 1 cup shortening
- 1 1/2 cups brown sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup buttermilk or sour milk*
- 1 3/4 cups sifted all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon soda*
- 1 teaspoon baking powder*
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 3 cups quick-cooking rolled oats
- 1 cup raisins
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
- *Or use sweet milk; reduce soda to 1/4 teaspoon; use 2 teaspoons baking powder

Step 1
Cream shortening, sugar and eggs together till light and fluffy. Stir in buttermilk. Sift together dry ingredients; stir into creamed mixture. Stir in oats, raisins and nuts. Drop from tablespoon 2 inches apart on lightly greased cookie sheet.
Bake in hot oven (400 degrees) about 8 minutes. Cool slightly; remove from pan. Makes about 5 dozen cookies.
