Ingredients

  • Ornamental Frosting:
  • 1 cup butter or margerine
  • 1 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 Tablespoon grated orange peel
  • 2 Tablespoons dark corn syrup
  • 1 Tablespoon water
  • 3 1/4 cup sifted enriched flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 4 cups sifted confectioners' sugar
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons light cream
  • Few drops food coloring, if desired

Preparation

Step 1

Thoroughly cream the butter and sugar. Add egg and beat until light and fluffy. Add orange peel, corn syrup and water: mix well. Sift together dry ingredients; stir into creamed mixture. Chill dough thououghly. On lightly floured surface, roll to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut in desired shapes with floured cookie cutters. Place 1 inch apart on ungreased baking sheet. Bake in 375* oven for 8 to 10 minutes. Frost when cool; trim with candies. Makes about 3 dozen 3 1/2 inch cookies.

Ornamental Frosting:
With pastry blender, cut butter into confectioners' sugar until mixture looks like cornmeal. Then add unbeaten egg whites, vanilla, cream of tartar. Beat thoroughly. Add cream. Beat in food coloring. Beat until frosting is of spreading consistency.
