Ingredients
- Cake:
- 4 oz bittersweet chocolate
- 1 cup butter
- 2 cup sugar
- 4 eggs, separated
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup buttermilk
- Filling and topping:
- 14 oz sweetened condensed milk
- 1/2 cup water
- 3 egg yolks
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1/2 cup butter (1 stick)
- 1 1/3 cup chopped pecans
- 1 3/4 cup coconut flakes

Preparation
Step 1
Cake:
Melt chocolate and cool. Cream butter and sugar. Beat in egg yolks, then stir in vanilla and chocolate. Mix flour, baking soda, and salt. Beat in flour mixture and buttermilk alternately.
Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form and fold into batter. Pour batter into 3 9-inch pans.
Filling:
Cook milk, eggs, and water over double boiler until thickened (or in saucepan over low heat). Add vanilla and butter, and whisk in until it is melted and smooth.
Assemble cake. Use Devil's Fudge Icing for frosting side of cake.
